FAQs

Shine a light on your dental veneers questions

Q: What is the difference between porcelain and bonded (composite) veneers?

A: The right type of dental veneer for you will depend on the final look you wish to achieve, the current shape, size and colour of your teeth, and the level of investment you’re looking to make.

Bonded (composite) veneers are more cost-effective and offer immediate results — but there are limitations to the extent of transformation we can achieve with this type of dental veneer. Porcelain veneers offer more versatility and a more significant transformation as they are masterfully crafted by a ceramist before being bonded to the tooth.

Porcelain is a premium material and extremely durable, so porcelain veneers typically last longer than composite veneers. The resin used in composite veneers is still durable, but it’s a softer material than porcelain and more porous. Composite veneers can also stain whereas porcelain veneers do not.

During your consultation, we’ll talk you through the pros and cons of each and help you determine which type of veneer is best for achieving your dream smile.

Q: What are the benefits of dental veneers?

A: Dental veneers offer a great way to improve the appearance of chipped, worn down or discoloured teeth. In some cases, they can also correct small gaps and crooked teeth (but teeth straightening treatments like Invisalign may be a better option for some patients).

With dental veneers, we can improve the shape, size and length of your teeth to create more symmetry and balance in your smile. It also allows us to enhance the shade of your teeth and correct issues like dark tetracycline staining. However, as with all dental procedures, a consultation is the best way to determine whether veneers are the best solution for your desired outcome.

Dental veneers are a commitment and must be carefully looked after for life — so we encourage you to do your research before committing to this treatment.

Q: How long does it take to get dental veneers?

A: Bonded veneers can be completed in just one appointment of 1 to 2 hours so you’ll see immediate results. Porcelain veneers require 2 to 3 appointments over a 2 to 4 week period due to the level of customisation, preparation and planning involved. In both cases, the first step to your new smile starts with an initial consultation where we discuss your options.

Q: Can dental veneers fix my crooked teeth?

A: It depends. If only minor corrections are required, dental veneers may be able to improve the appearance of crooked teeth. However, if you have severely crooked teeth, bite issues and need significant straightening, then a treatment like Invisalign will be the better option. Many people choose to get dental veneers after teeth straightening so the two treatments often go hand-in-hand.
