Smooth out your your anti-wrinkle injection questions heres

Q: What are anti-wrinkle injections and how do they work?

A:  At Illumident, we only use premium medical-grade, TGA-listed pharmaceuticals in our anti-wrinkle treatment. This is a simple, non-surgical procedure where the pharmaceutical is safely and gently injected into specific muscles in small therapeutic quantities.

Anti-wrinkle injections work by relaxing the facial or neck muscles and reducing the movement of the skin above the muscle. In turn, this helps to reduce the formation and appearance of wrinkles. With less muscle contraction, the skin appears much smoother and more youthful.

At Illumident, our anti-wrinkle injection appointments take approximately 30 to 60 minutes. You will also need a 20 minute consultation prior to your treatment, which you can do on a separate day or combine in the one appointment.

Q: How long do anti-wrinkle injections last?

A: Anti-wrinkle injections begin to work 2 to 3 days after treatment and reach their full effect within 14 days. Keep in mind that the effect of anti-wrinkle injections will wear off over time and results will typically last from 3 to 6 months, depending on the individual. This is why repeat treatments are required to maintain your desired results.

Q: Are anti-wrinkle injections safe?

A: Yes, anti-wrinkle injections are among the safest cosmetic procedures available when administered by a qualified and experienced cosmetic injector or medical professional.

At Illumident, you can rest assured that you’re receiving the best in aesthetic care — Dr Isabel is a dentist and highly trained cosmetic injector. Plus, we only ever use the highest quality medical-grade pharmaceuticals, scientifically researched treatments and the latest techniques.

Q: Do anti-wrinkle injections hurt?

A: Most of our patients find our anti-wrinkle injections to be relatively painless. Generally, it is a minimally invasive procedure with very little discomfort. You may only feel slight pressure with each injection.

However, if you’re feeling a little nervous or would like some extra comfort, we can apply a topical anaesthetic 15 minutes before treatment to help numb the area. This means you’ll barely feel a thing!

Q: Are there any anti-wrinkle injections side effects?

A: As with all medical procedures, there are some side effects that come with anti-wrinkle injections. All of the potential side effects will be discussed with you in detail during your consultation. However, please see the below as a general guide.

After your treatment, it’s possible to experience:

  • Temporary bruising and bleeding
  • Mild swelling
  • Headache
  • Asymmetry
  • Drooping lip
  • Ptosis

In most cases, these typical side effects of anti-wrinkle injectables are mild and short-lived.

Other more uncommon side effects may include:

  • Double vision
  • Difficult swallowing
  • Difficulty speaking or pronouncing words

It’s also important to note that anti-wrinkle injections are not suitable for those who:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have muscular diseases
  • Have blood or nervous system disorders
  • Have psychological concerns
Q: What is the difference between anti-wrinkle injections and dermal filler?

A: Anti-wrinkle injections are used to relax the muscles in the face and neck, helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Dermal fillers are used to restore volume, structure and hydration in the skin, while also smoothing out wrinkles. Both treatments can be (and often are) used in combination to enhance the effect of anti-wrinkle treatment.

Q: What areas can be treated with anti-wrinkle injections?

A: Anti-wrinkle injections are suitable for the face, neck and décolletage. The areas we most commonly treat include:

  • ForeheadFrown lines (lines between the eyes)
  • Crow’s feet (lines around the outer eyes)
  • Eyebrow lift
  • Bunny lines (lines on the nose)
  • Lip lines
  • Chin dimples
  • Mouth corner lift
  • Jowl lift
  • Jaw, chin, neck and masseters (to slim the face or jaw line)
  • Neck bands (also called a Nefertiti lift)
Q: What is the before and aftercare for anti-wrinkle injections?

A: During your consultation, we will discuss what you need to do before and after your anti-wrinkle treatment in detail. This information is tailored to suit each patient, depending on their individual circumstances. However, we’ve outlined some general pre-op and post-op guidelines below.

Before your treatment, it is advised that you avoid any medications or substances that may increase bleeding or bruising, such as:

  • Aspirin (unless this is medically prescribed — in which case DO NOT stop taking it and discuss this with us at your consultation)
  • Ibuprofen
  • Fish oil supplements
  • Alcohol

After your treatment, we will talk you through your post-op instructions and answer any questions you may have about aftercare. Generally, you can resume most of your regular activities immediately after treatment. You can also apply makeup to the area straight afterwards if you wish. However, please avoid touching the treated area for at least a few hours.

You’ll also attend a complimentary follow-up appointment 2 weeks after your treatment so we can assess your results and discuss if touch-up treatment is needed (fees will apply for any further treatment).
